Social Responsibility
Human resources
The employees of Senwes constitute one of the cornerstones that enable the Group to achieve its objectives.
Retirement and death benefits are available to all qualifying employees and the trustees who manage these funds are drawn on an equal basis from the ranks of the employees and the employer. Performance remuneration systems have been put into place and will even be expanded to adequately motivate qualifying staff.
The Group continued its staff training and skills development programmes. These programmes are aimed at empowering staff and creating sufficient skills to the benefit of the business.
The Group has committed itself to provide equal opportunities for all employees. Agreed strategies and plans of action are in place to ensure equal employment and, where suitably trained candidates are not available, to implement skills development programmes for existing staff.
Community involvement
The Group accepts its responsibility to the community and makes financial and other contributions to organisations and institutions in the communities where it conducts its business. The majority of the Group's industries are situated in rural areas where these businesses create badly needed economic activity, contributing to job creation and social investment in these areas.
There is a dire need to develop and establish emerging farmers in the commercial agricultural industry. Senwes's core business is based on the provision of input resources and the development of access to markets for producers' agricultural businesses. Progress has been made with the appointment of staff and liaison with development agencies in order to assist with the exploitation, implementation and support of opportunities in this regard.
Safety, health and environment
The Group recognises the right of every employee to work in a safe and healthy environment as well as the responsibility of businesses with regard to the impact of their operating activities on the environment.
Safety and health risks are an integral part of risk management procedures and regular audits are performed to monitor performance in this regard. The effect of operating activities on the environment is evaluated on an ongoing basis to ensure that these activities are as environmentally friendly as possible.
